The FIU Women's Studies Center, established in 1982, sponsors and administers academic degrees, courses, and community programming pertaining to the study of women of different ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, religions, abilities, and economic backgrounds. This includes the study of gender expression across time and place, the conventions of femininity and masculinity, and the experiences of transgender persons.

Bachelor of Arts in Women's Studies

Admission: To qualify for admission to the B.A. program, FIU undergraduates must have met all the university's lower division requirements, including CLAST or its equivalent, and have completed 60 semester hours. Download Academic Program Declaration/Change Form and Student Information Sheet and bring to Women's Studies academic advisor in DM 212.

Requirements: The B.A. program in Women's Studies requires 30 hours of interdisciplinary upper-division course work. Students who elect to major in Women's Studies are required to declare a minor in another academic discipline (courses may overlap; see option A below). Students who choose to declare a double major are exempt from the minor requirement (see option B below). The major requires a core concentration of four courses (see below) and six electives for a total of 10 courses. Any core concentration course that is not taken for the core requirement may be taken as an elective. For a complete list of courses, see the university course catalog, or click on the courses link above.

Students should consult with Women's Studies faculty and graduate student advisors to select courses. New courses are added to the curriculum on a regular basis. Students are strongly encouraged to take one course on ethnicity, class or race; a course with a computer-use requirement; and a course with an oral presentation requirement. Women's Studies courses are cross-listed in the schedule with courses from other programs. Core course substitutions require an advisor's approval.
