The Elaine Gordon Scholarship program was established in 2000 to honor the life and work of Elaine Gordon, a former state legislator who, for 22 years, championed equal rights for women.

To be considered for this award, a student must submit:

  • A resume.
  • A typed, two-page essay addressing how the student has and intends to pursue the goals expressed in Elaine Gordon's work and achievenments (click on expanded biography for more information), as well as how financial assistance will help achieve these goals.
  • Financial need statement (financial need will be one consideration in awarding the scholarship) .
  • One letter of recommendation from a present or former professor.
  • A current SASS and/or transcript reflecting all course work completed

Criteria for the Award:

  • Be fully admitted in the College of Arts and Sciences as a Women’s Studies Major or Certificate earner.
  • Have completed or be enrolled in a minimum of 9 credit hours of Women’s Studies courses.
  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate student at the time of application.
  • Have a cummulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Financial need will be one consideration in awarding the scholarship.
  • Undergraduates with one to two semesters of study remaining are eligible. In addition, graduating seniors who meet the above criteria and have proof of admission to a graduate degree program at FIU for Fall 2009 also are eligible for the award.

200 Scholarship

A Society of  Professional Women, Inc.

The 200 Scholarship was donated by A Society of Professional Women, Inc., an organization of Dade County women from different professions. The group established this scholarship program for women students at FIU who demonstrate strong ability but face financial need. The award recognizes that women face multiple barriers to furthering their education. This scholarship is intended to help women students focus their attention mainly on education and career goals.

To be considered for this award, a Student must Submit:

  1. Resume.
  2. Biographical essay that includes educational background, reason for applying for the award, explanation of how the student’s career goals will advance women’s place in society.
  3. Financial need statement. (one paragraph)
  4. An unofficial FIU transcript reflecting all course work completed.
  5. One letter of recommendation from an FIU professor.
  6. Application Cover Sheet

Application deadline is:

Friday, February 20, 2009, 5 p.m.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to female residents of South Florida who are U.S. citizens.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Undergraduate with a minimum of one prior semester at FIU and a full year of remaining studies at the inception of the award (in the fall semester).
  • Low income student.
  • Must have earned a minimum of 3 credit hours of Women’s Studies coursework.
