“We
intend to learn about the many ways women in the Southern
hemisphere define feminism, self-worth, and commitment
to human rights through this international consortium.
As western feminists, we realize we have a lot to
learn from our colleagues in the Third World,”
said FIU Professor Aurora Morcillo, co-leader of the
consortium project.
“This is an exciting step towards addressing
women’s concerns on a global scale,” said
Suzanna Rose, Director of the Women’s Studies
Center at FIU’s South Campus. “FIU faculty
and students will now have the opportunity, by working
with consortium partners, to conduct research on the
health concerns of women in South Africa, domestic
violence in Colombia, how tourism affects women’s
employment in India, and the influence of religion
on women wearing the veil in Morocco, among other
topics. Comparative research will be undertaken as
well.”
The
Consortium is made up of the following six universities
